Oh boy, nerdy radio things!

ARS stands for Amateur Radio Service (aka Ham radio), and GMRS stands for General Mobile Radio Service.

Ughhhh, so what is this? These are radio spectrums that have been assigned and set aside by the FCC (and other related orgs in various parts the world) just for you and me – i.e., using specific spectrums of light to communicate freely with one another (with a basic license and following reasonable rules).

This is actually really cool stuff, and not only a privilege, but part of what I consider to be a necessity as a citizen of my country and the planet.
